Grade 5 Productivity of a River Basin System
Through HANDS-ON activities,
Students DISCOVER that:

  • The river and its inland areas are CONNECTED to the coast.
  • Each organism, plant or animal, contributes to basin PRODUCTIVITY.
  • PLANTS provide habitat, hold soil, and add nutrients.
  • ANIMALS provide food in all stages of their life cycles, control insect populations, enrich the soil, and create habitat.
PLANKTON and plankton habitat are VITAL to the health of the system.
In the SPRING, students visit the river, discover floodplain productivity, and take WATER SAMPLES back to the classroom to learn about plankton—the base of the aquatic food web.
