Grade 3 The Living River Basin System
Through HANDS-ON activities,
Students DISCOVER that:
- The entire Earths’ surface is composed of RIVER BASIN SYSTEMS.
- The WORK of flowing water is eroding and depositing soil by weight making HABITATS.
- Habitats are places where living organisms find their BASIC NEEDS—air, water, food, and shelter—everything they need to live.
- Plants and animals have ADAPTATIONS that help them get these basic needs.
- All organisms CONTRIBUTE through their adaptations to the system to make the river a LIVING RIVER BASIN SYSYTEM.
The outdoor STUDY-TRIP, led by trained volunteer guides, reinforces concepts introduced in the classroom.
On the study-trip, students make a MODEL RIVER and observe the work of flowing water—making HABITATS. Students are introduced to plants and animals that are adapted to live in these habitats that the river has created.
